STYLE AND PERSONALITY
Few players on Tour can match Frances Tiafoe when it comes to charisma, the American winning hordes of fans around the world with his swashbuckling tennis and his wide smile, whatever the scoreline. An outstanding junior, his funky forehand looks like it shouldn’t work, but it does and he seems to be peaking at just the right time. As a young child, Tiafoe often spent days on end at the tennis club where his father worked and he looks as if he enjoys the sport just as much as he did then, while his post-match interviews are almost as entertaining as his tennis.
CAREER
The prodigiously talented Tiafoe was a top junior, reaching No 2 in the rankings, and was tipped as a star early in his teens. He first played the US Open in 2015, as a 16-year-old, having already made his slam debut at Roland-Garros earlier the same year. Though he won his first title in Delray Beach in 2018, he found titles hard to come by in the next few years, losing his next four. In 2022, though, he really seemed to find his game, reaching his first Grand Slam semi-final with a thrilling run at the US Open. He was one of the stars as the USA won the Laver Cup and then in 2023, after going 5-0 to help the US win the United Cup, he won his second career title on clay in Houston and is a man high on confidence.
