Best Grand Slam performance: Semi-final of Wimbledon (2021), quarter-final of US Open (2020) and Australian Open (2022)
Power, precision and risk combine to create Denis Shapovalov’s calling card. Firing in from the baseline or rushing into the net, opponents are wrong-footed by his aggression and swift decision-making. His unpredictability and speed mean he’ll slot right in to UTS – the field had better beware. Oh – and don’t forget that Shapo has hidden musical skills as a rapper – expect some rhymes when he grabs the mic!
Career
Canada’s favourite, Shapovalov was taken to home hearts back in 2017 when he beat Grand Slam champions Juan Martin del Potro and Rafael Nadal in successive rounds of the Rogers Cup en route to becoming the youngest man ever to reach a Masters 1000 semi-final. In addition to helping his country to Davis Cup glory in 2022, Shapovalov has made the quarter-finals of both the Australian Open and the US Open, going one better at Wimbledon. After 1 first ATP Title in Stockholm in 2019, he won his second title in Belgrade 5 years later, finishing his season in the best possible way, and his third title in Dallas in 2025.
