373 days later, Holger Rune is winning again, with Gothenburg on the horizon
For 373 days, Holger Rune’s last ATP Tour victory had belonged to another season. On Monday evening in Basel, the former world No. 4 finally added a new one. It took three sets, two tiebreaks and a deciding tiebreak that almost got away from him.
His previous ATP win had carried him into the semifinals in Stockholm in October 2025. The Achilles injury he suffered there kept him off the tour for 11 months.
The decisive moments came at the very end. Rune raced to a 5-1 lead in the final-set tiebreak, then watched Halys win four straight points to draw level at 5-5. The Dane took the next two, converting his first match point.
Rune has now won 11 of his 14 matches in Basel. He reached at least the semifinals in each of his three previous appearances there, from 2022 to 2024, including the 2022 final he lost to Félix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 7-5. He will face Pole Hubert Hurkacz, seed No. 10, or Belgian Zizou Bergs for a place in the quarterfinals.
Rune is one of the eight players set for UTS Gothenburg by BNP Paribas, on 12 and 13 December at the Scandinavium arena. On Day 1, he meets Alexander Bublik in the quarterfinals, a matchup with plenty of UTS history. Rune knocked Bublik out twice at UTS London: in 2023, in sudden death, and again in 2024.
He also leads their ATP head-to-head 2-1, including an indoor win in Paris in 2024, in the same kind of conditions they will find in Gothenburg.
