Draper stuns champion Alcaraz on grass at Queen’s
Britain’s UTS star Jack Draper recorded the best win of his career on Thursday as he stunned defending champion Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (3), 6-3 in the second round of the cinch Championships at London’s Queen’s Club.
“The Power”, who won the UTS Grand Final in December, was too good for last year’s Wimbledon champion Alcaraz, who also won the French Open title earlier this month.
“I knew I would have to play well,” said Draper, who ended Alcaraz’s 13-match winning streak on grass with a brilliant performance. (He is an) incredible talent and so amazing for the sport. So I had to come out and play really well and luckily I did today, so thank you.”
The left-hander finished off a tight first set with another fine serve and then earned the crucial break – the only one of the match – to lead 4-2 in the second. He held his nerve to finish off for victory.
Draper, who won his first career ATP Tour title last weekend in Stuttgart, is now ranked No 28 on the live rankings and is set to be seeded at Wimbledon for the first time when the Championships begin on July 1.
